8th Annual Sky’s the Limit Mini Olympics

5m5a8420The 8th Annual Sky’s the Limit Mini Olympics held at Beaton Park, Wollongong proved to be another great success with over 250 competitors taking part from as far afield as Sydney to the north, Narooma to the south and Goulburn in the west.

The opening ceremony is always a great feature of the day with the competitors decked out in their new bright orange Mini Olympics T-shirts marching past with their team banners and flags unfurled, everyone then gathered in front of the grandstand where we were offered a Welcome to country by Dharawal elder Richard Davies followed by a brilliant Didgeridoo performance by Graham Carpenter. Ashley Olafson performed a great rendition of the National Anthem despite some equipment failure, EET CEO Amanda Calwell – Smith then officially opened 2015 8th Annual
Mini Olympics followed by some impassioned speeches from Mini Olympics Ambassadors Len Snowden and Angelica Comelli.

Then it was time for the racing to begin and the overcast weather couldn’t diminish the excitement everyone was feeling as our first competitors lined up for the 400m or headed to the wide range of field events on offer including shot put, turbo throw javelin, high jump or long jump. Another highlight of the day has to be the Novelty race and the local business people who took part in it didn’t disappoint with plenty of whacky and colourful costumes on show. We were grateful to have Olympian Shaun Boyle and Marty and Fairlie from i98FM preside over the Medal Presentations. There were many great performances on the day and the Olympic spirit was alive and well with plenty of high fives and congratulations being offered to other competitors no matter their result, the Mini Olympics once again truly displayed that it is a showcase of diversity.
